Session 1: 9/9/09
Jaela Daran the Keeper of the Flame, head of the Church of the Silver Flame, and leader of the country of Thrane sent out quiet requests through the Five Nations for the aid of Adventurers.
Five adventurers responded for various reasons ranging from a general desire to aid an organization known to be a bastion of Good in the world, to the offer of a reward, to curiosity, and even just the general desire to smash things. A sixth person also joined the adventurers at the orders of an unknown entity.
In a private room at the Light's Hope Inn, the adventurers were met by Jaela herself and a single bodyguard (albeit a very rough looking bodyguard). Introductions were made: Zhoran, an Eladrin who seemed curious about a great many things and carried a sword while claiming to be a student of Arcane magic; Ishbah, a Dwarven fighter whose boisterous manner was only outdone by the giant maul he carried; Azhi, a Tiefling dressed in dark leather armor; Khashana, a Kalashtar carrying a greatbow and claiming to be an Arcane caster; Variel d'Thurrani, an Elf assassin bearing a Dragonmark of Shadow; and last but certainly not least, a Warforged claiming to be a simple service and servitude unit, designated 909. After some more discussion and a few sidetracks, Jaela finally got to her request for the group.
Give the dynamics of the group that answered her call, Jaela forgoes political embroidery and flowery language and makes a simple request. She asks the party to kill High Cardinal Krozen, perhaps the second most powerful person in the Church of the Silver Flame if the proper chain of authority were being followed. The group slowly recovers from the surprise of the request as Zhoran recites Krozen's biography. Once they get back to the topic at hand, Jaela promises the group a reward valuing roughly 20,000 gold per person if they are successful. Jaela goes on to explain that the party will have no contact with her after they leave the Inn. They are to travel to Flamekeep by Lightning Rail (tickets purchased by Jaela for each member). From there, they must find a way to either get past Krozen's guards or setup a meeting of some sort with Krozen.
The group decides to meet together at the lightning rail station at noon. Zhoran follows Khashana, assaulting (haha, get it?) her with questions about Kalashtar and her abilities to channel arcane magic through her bow. The strange warforged unit 909 follows behind Khashana, never closer or further away from her than five feet. The others in the group move off to accomplish some things before they take the rail.
The noon rail arrives to the station on time and the group boards except for Variel who seems to be absent. Zhoran seems to have picked up a young human girl who was intrigued by his sword, but also couldn't seem to tell the truth. The rail ride between Aruldusk and Sigilstar passes smoothly, the young girl sitting beside Zhoran as the rest of the group had taken seats in the back section of the second car. Khashana spends the time trying to teach the absent minded warforged about the basics of Arcane magic.
The lightning rail connection between Sigilstar and Flamekeep wasn't as uneventful. About halfway through the trip, a group of would-be bandits tries to hijack the lightning rail. Combining archery, arcane magic, martial skill, and teleportation with an unusually strong attack from the warforged's staff, the group easily stopped the bandits with no loss of civilian lives. Khashana and the warforged stayed with the rail conductor while the rest of the group checked the other train cars and the dead bodies.
About an hour later, the rail stopped in Flamekeep and the group disembarked, reuniting with Variel who claimed to have been seated in the third car. Zhoran was sure he checked that compartment, but Variel seemed to be honest. Strangely enough, the little girl who was all but attached to Zhoran even through the fight with the bandits was no where to be found.
Now the party is in Flamekeep and must find a way to accomplish the task set by Jaela.
