The important events in the history of the world.
Birth of an Empire:
It all started with house Turathi, nobles of a human kingdom whose name has been lost to time. The kingdom had become too large for the leaders to control and was falling into disrepair. Fearing the realm would dissolve into anarchy, they called upon their dark god, Asmodeus. Seeing the potential for a great increase to his power, he made them a deal: he would grant them allies and power, and in return they would be transformed into his image and conquer in his name. They agreed, and it was not long before the old human kingdom was destroyed to make way for the mighty Tiefling empire of Bael Turath.
Reign of Dragons:
At the time, dragons ruled the empire of Arkhosia along with their dragonborn vassals. As they had goals of expansion, the two nations promptly came into conflict. There were some initial attempts at a truce, but it was not long before tensions escalated into a long and bitter war.
Team Evil:
The leaders of Bael Turath knew that even the power of their infernal masters might not be enough to topple an empire led by ancient dragons. It was time for some diabolical scheming. While the dragonlords of Arkhosia were devoted to Bahamut, there were still several underground factions devoted to Tiamat. In addition, the militaristic githyanki would surely relish the prospect of capturing wealth and territory in the Prime Material. As a bonus, both groups were small enough to be easily betrayable once Arkhosia fell. Asmodeus was pleased with their diabolical plot (plus he had a bet riding on the outcome), so when the messenger imps went out, he talked Tiamat into having her followers join his in the war against Bahamut. Tiamat's forces worked to sabatoge Arkhosia from within, while the Githyanki warped in their capital to provide reinforcements and magical expertise.
Deus Ex Machina:
Had Pelor not chosen to intervene, Arkhosia would have probably fallen within a week. As it was, he sent his exarchs to gather all the humans wishing to reject the evil ways of Bael Turath and grant them his blessing. In the same way that Asmodeus changed the people of Bael Turath into tieflings, Pelor changed these humans into aasimar. He also sent a message to the githzerai informing them of the events that had transpired. Pelor correctly assumed that the desire to stop their evil kin would drive them to travel to the prime material and aid the Arkhosians. He hoped that these new allies would be able to hold back the spread of the evil long enough for the dwarves and elves to be convinced that the war was not going away, and they needed to join the fight against Bael Turath.
From the Shadows:
Pelor's plan probably would have worked if it were not for one factor he and everyone else forgot to count on. Certain drow matrons had been keeping a closer eye on the surface since they found out about the war. When they learned that the elves were finaly starting to prepare for war, the drow saw it as a perfect opportunity to take revenge on their surface cousins and carve out a piece of fine surface territory. Though the church of Lolth was opposed to any action on the surface, even they could not stop thirteen Matron Mothers. After a breif skirmish with the church and the remaining houses, the thirteen and their followers headed for the surface. It happened that the quickest way was through the main dwarven tunnels. The drow told them to get out of their way; the dwarves said over their dead bodies, and the drow said, very well. While the dwarves did fight valiently, the drow had to deal with mindflayers, beholders, aboleths, and worse on a daily basis. Unfortunately the dwarves were no more than a very minor inconvienence. By the time the rest of the world realized what had happened, the drow were about halfway through conquering the major elven nation.
More to come...
